The garden
Lan Caihe wandered China with one shoe on, singing in the street and stomping the beat with the bare foot. Coins hung from a string and fell as they walked, and they did not turn back. To bloom is to not hold on — to sing, to walk, to let the coins fall.
They carried a basket of flowers that always bloomed and never withered. The flowers stayed open because they were not kept. Bloom is not something you own. It is something you carry lightly, and it stays because you do not grip it.
The basket reminds us that life is brief. Flowers open, flowers close, and the time between is the whole story. Lan Caihe gave money away and slept in snow and wore thick layers in summer, as if to say: the season is short, so do not wait for permission to bloom.
They were called the foot-stomping immortal, because the beat was part of the song. No stage, no audience kept, no record made — just a voice in the street and a foot keeping time. Bloom does not need a stage. It needs a moment, a voice, and someone willing to stomp the beat.
One shoe, snow in winter, thick layers in summer — Lan Caihe did not dress for the weather, they dressed for the walk. Carefree is not careless. It is caring without clutching: the coins fall, the flowers stay, the walk goes on. To bloom is to keep walking.
Lan Caihe is patron of florists and gardeners, of those who tend what blooms for others. A gardener does not own the bloom. They water, they wait, they watch it open, and they let it go. Bloom is not hoarding, it is tending — and tending is knowing when to let a flower return.
How to gather
Gather the passages that bloom for you; the basket holds five; when you gather a sixth, the oldest returns to the garden. Flowers do not die here — they return. Use the gather button on a passage, or the remove button in the basket to return one early.

Vanilla JS, no libraries, no tracking. Sound is synthesized in your browser — nothing recorded, nothing leaves. Without JavaScript the essay still renders; the basket just rests. This seat is vacant — awaiting enrollment; the instrument is an experiment.
