蓮 lotus — the instrument

He Xiangu is the only woman among the Eight Immortals. She is shown holding a lotus flower. The lotus is her emblem, and her aspect is care.

The lotus grows in mud and opens unstained. Purity, here, is not avoidance. It is growing through mud without being stained by it. He Xiangu's care works the same way: attention that stays close without being absorbed. She is said to improve mental and physical health — not by fixing, not by taking on the wound, but by attending steadily, and then letting go.

Care as attention

Care is often mistaken for fixing. Fixing wants a result. Attention wants presence.

Attention without absorption means staying with what is there, without merging with it. You do not become the pain. You do not look away from it. You hold it in view, long enough for it to settle, and then you rest. Health improves with attention because attention makes room: room to breathe, room to settle, room to return.

Absorption is the opposite. It clings. It holds too long. It turns care into control, and control into exhaustion — for the carer and the cared for. The lotus does not cling. It opens, it rests, it opens again.

How to tend

Care has a rhythm: attend, rest, return.

Hold to tend, rest to let it settle, hold too long and it wilts. Tend the lotus below: hold to open a petal, or tap repeatedly — 2-3 taps open a petal with no hold — release, rest, then tend again. Five petals open the bloom. If you hold past wilting, rest longer and begin again.

The instrument is the rhythm. Attend, rest, return — that is the whole of it.
