笛 flute — the instrument
Han Xiangzi was the nephew of the Tang poet Han Yu. He disdained the Confucian exams, left the career his uncle wanted for him, and pursued Taoism. He played the flute. The stories say his playing brought harmony: it soothed animals, gave life, made flowers bloom. Once, in winter, he made peonies bloom in several colors — pattern returning out of season, life answering music.
Han Yu wanted his nephew to take the exams and serve the state, to follow the pattern of office and rank. Han Xiangzi chose a different pattern: wandering, music, the Way. The stories say he brought his uncle, his aunt, and his wife to the Way, not by argument but by showing them a life that bloomed out of season. Pattern and conformity are not the same. Conformity repeats what is given. Pattern returns what is alive.
The flute is the instrument of pattern. A single note is a sound. Notes in sequence are a pattern. Play a phrase twice and you hear it as a phrase, not as separate notes. Pattern is something you make, not just something you find.
What the flute does
This page is the flute. It has five notes, the pentatonic scale: Gong, Shang, Jue, Zhi, Yu. Play notes and they appear in the pattern strip, the last sixteen. Play a phrase twice — the same three notes, then the same three again — and it is marked as a pattern. Hear Han's phrase adds its six notes to the strip. Hear it back plays the strip in sequence. Clear empties the strip.
The sound is the pattern. Pitch is the note. Rhythm is the timing. There is no other sound.
How to play
Play — press a note button, or keys 1–5, or keys A S D F G. Each note sounds and joins the strip.
Hear Han's phrase — plays Gong, Shang, Jue, Zhi, Yu, Zhi, and adds those six notes to the strip.
Hear it back — plays the strip in sequence.
Clear — empties the strip.
Sound — toggles sound on and off. Sound is on, but nothing plays until you play a note.

Vanilla JS, no libraries, no tracking. Sound is synthesized in your browser — nothing recorded, nothing leaves. Without JavaScript the essay still renders; the flute just rests. This is an experiment for a vacant seat, not an enrollment.
